  10. Is there a way to configure a modem so that it makes a connection very
  11. rapidly?  Right now, it takes a long time (about 25.5 seconds) to form a
  12. ppp link between my SupraExpress 288 PnP external modem and a 28.8
  13. Multitech modem.  Now a lot of that time is taken up by the software on
  14. the two machines and by the telephone company.  But I'm interested in
  15. finding ways to reduce the time spent by the modems.

  17. More than one second is spent waiting for the dial tone.  Is there a
  18. way to reduce that?  The dial tone is present practically instantly.
  19. I tried using blind dialing, but that has a minimum 2 second delay, as
  20. far as I could tell.

  22. The default dialing rate is rather slow.  I configured s11 to 50 ms, and
  23. that sped up the dialing phase a lot.

  25. The remote modem is set to answer on the first ring.  But is it possible to
  26. tell a modem to answer at the onset of the ring, rather than after the
  27. ring?

  29. The modems spend a lot of time (about 10 seconds) negotiating with each
  30. other.  Can this time be reduced?
